During my time in Bali I was deeply moved by the simple everyday greeting, “Namaste”. “The divine light within me bows to the divine light within you.” It is the equivalent of our, “hi” or “hello” – only with respect. It is the greeting given to everyone, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, citizenship…In Bali I was the alien and every day people bowed to the divine light in me and taught me to bow to the divine light in them.
It seems so simple.
I’ve read the bible. I read it in the same spirit that I read the I-Ching or the Upanishads. There is terrific wisdom to be found in the world’s holy books. They are not rule books nor are they literal histories. They are meant to shine light into dark corners. For instance, would it not be helpful and instructive for our nation to consider this passage:
“When an alien lives with you in your land, do not mistreat him. The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt.” Leviticus 19:33-34
It seems so simple. The divine light within me bows to the divine light within you. And yet, we are building concentration camps. In a nation of immigrants, we demonize immigrants. As Kerri has noted, this man, this party and it’s followers lack reverence.
“Peace is of the heart, not of the mind. To know peace you have to find out what beauty is.” ~ Jiddhu Krishnamurti, Life Ahead
Beauty is recognizing the divine light that shines through both you and me. It is the same light.
Depending upon where we stand on this earth, we are all aliens. We would do well to focus on the shared light, to steep ourselves in the beauty, to do unto others as we would have done unto us. It seems so simple.
